At this point, audiences are a bit tired of Marvel movies — and MCU presentations. MCU “phase” announcements (like this MCU Phase 4 announcement) lay out years’ worth of projects, including many that no one asked for. (Though, maybe Deadpool and Wolverine will save the MCU.)
As a promotion for Despicable Me 4, animation studio Illumination and Gru actor Steve Carell parodied these storied announcements with their own about the “Illumination Megaverse.” The satiric Megaverse contains 50 interconnected stories featuring the Mega Minions — superhero characters in the fourth Despicable Me installment — over the next 100 years. This includes a Minions Summer House reality show, a Broadway musical, and of course an ice show version of the musical.
“Excited?” Carell asks. “You should be.”
The Despicable Me 4 Super Bowl trailer mocked AI-generated images, so it’s no surprise Illumination is continuing its irreverent streak to promote the movie.
Despicable Me 4 hits theaters on July 3, 2024.
